Social Supervision
Eligibility: This course is open to staff who carry out the role of social supervisor.
This two-day programme strengthens understanding of Ministry of Justice functions and legislation, clarifies duties and responsibilities, and develops information gathering and communication skills to support multidisciplinary practice and risk management. Supervising line managers are encouraged to attend day one.
Manual Handling Refresher for South Gloucestershire Council Occupational Therapy Assistants
Eligibility: This course is open to Occupational Therapy staff only.
This is a half-day mandatory course for Adult Social Care Occupational Therapist Assistants who have responsibility for moving people. It needs to be completed annually to meet the expectations of your role as a Social Care Practitioner (Occupational Therapy).
Introduction to the Care Act (April 2026 onwards)
This course is ideal for Social Care and Occupational Therapy Practitioners who work directly with people in need of care and support. Delivered over two half-days, this course gives an understanding of the Care Act 2014, its principles, and duties.
Basic Clinical Skills (April 2026 onwards)
This workshop is for people working in domiciliary, residential and day care services (statutory, voluntary, independent and private sectors) in South Gloucestershire. It includes a trainer presentation, discussion, and a multiple-choice assessment to confirm knowledge.
Administration of Medication (April 2026 onwards)
This three-hour course will help you to gain knowledge of terminology and legal aspects surrounding medicine administration. The workshop will cover principles, complications and risks associated with administering medications, responsibilities and reporting.
Motivational Interviewing
Eligibility: This course is open to professionals working in relevant areas.
This course is for professionals who work in mental health, substance misuse, offending, social work, domestic violence, supported housing, young people's services, family work etc. It provides a deeper understanding of skills and knowledge in motivational interviewing.
Mental Health Awareness (April 2026 onwards)
This community-based course is for anyone who works with adults, children and families to raise awareness about mental health and wellbeing at all ages. It covers responding to a person who needs support, the views of people with lived experience, and information on approaches and services.
Understanding Personality Disorder (April 2026 onwards)
Eligibility: This course is open to professionals at all levels where this is relevant.
This course will help you develop an understanding of the diagnostic category of personality disorder. It provides an introduction to the issues and can be an update for staff who are already trained or experienced in working with people with a personality disorder.
Assessing the Needs of Autistic Adults (for SW practitioners completing assessments under the Care Act 2014)
This course is for practitioners who assess the needs of autistic adults. You must complete the Oliver McGowan Autism and Learning Disability e-learning before attending.
Connecting Care e-module
Connecting Care is a South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bristol City Council system that supports better information sharing; joining up information; better, safer decisions; and increased efficiency. This e-module covers what Connecting Care is and how to access it.
Continuing Healthcare
This course, delivered by Beacon, will increase organisational understanding and capability in key aspects of the National Framework for NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) to make sure that people we support receive healthcare they are entitled to.
Conversations with Carers
This one-day course is for adult practitioners/managers who have a role in effective practice with carers in South Gloucestershire. It covers knowledge, understanding and skills required to work with carers as key partners of Adult Social Care.
Dementia Simulation
This course is designed for professionals to experience and better understand the experiences of people with a dementia diagnosis. It explores how they perceive and interpret information when overstimulated which can trigger hallucinations, affect cognitive function, and increase confusion.
Direct Payments
This half-day course will increase knowledge and understanding about Direct Payments (DP). It will build your confidence to promote DPs to people who have care and/or support needs to enhance their wellbeing and independence.

Oliver McGowan Autism and Learning Disability Training
This two-tier training for professionals who provide direct support will enhance awareness and understanding of autism and learning disabilities. Tier 1 is an e-learning module; Tier 2 is a face-to-face session co-delivered with people who have lived experience.
