At any one time, a quarter of hospital beds are occupied by people who have diagnosed dementia (NICE 2021). Learning and improving the quality of care for this group of patients should be on everyone’s agenda.
The training provides an opportunity to experience the perspective of someone with dementia. It will deepen your understanding of symptoms that patients with dementia may experience and how the environment and staff approach can impact this.
This training is conducted in a clinical skills room, where we use equipment such as hospital beds, bed rails and manual handling equipment. When the simulation is complete, time for a debrief and reflection is given. The simulation is interactive and practical giving you an opportunity to experience care from the perspective of a patient. Resources are worn to replicate the physical symptoms someone may experience with dementia.
Please note: this training can be triggering if you have friends, family or care for someone with dementia, have a vestibular impairment or experience vertigo. If this is the case, please inform trainers in advance so adjustments can be made.
