• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to South Glos Council adult social care staff only.

This essential training is named in honour of Oliver McGowan, whose tragic death in an NHS hospital brought national attention to the urgent need for improved understanding and support for autistic people and individuals with a learning disability within health and social care settings.

This course contains content that may be triggering for some people. If you experience this please let the trainer know and seek support from your manager or a trusted colleague.

The training is structured into two tiers:

    • Tier 1 is an e-learning module designed to build general awareness and understanding of autism and learning disabilities.
    • Tier 2 is a face-to-face session tailored for professionals who are more likely to provide direct care or support to autistic people or those with a learning disability.

Tier 2 training is delivered by a qualified lead facilitator, supported by two accredited co-facilitators with lived experience—one with a learning disability and one who is autistic. This unique co-delivery model ensures the training is both authentic and impactful.

Please note: completion of the Tier 1 e-learning module is a prerequisite for attending the Tier 2 session.
