    Course overview

    Eligibility: This course is open to Y3/4, Y4 or Y4/5 teachers in any infant or primary school.

    This one hour, online twilight will discuss the core learning that Y4 pupils need to have in order to be ready for the Y5 maths curriculum. This session will support you with planning your term 6 maths by ensuring that you plan for the gaps in learning as well as offering challenge for your more able.

    The twilight starts by looking at fun ways to secure a full understanding of the place value system including decimal place value. For mental addition and subtraction, we will play games on number lines and Gattegno charts and look at how other table top games such as using Uno cards, playing cards and dominoes can be used to support practising written calculation.

    We look at how step counting can support recall of all times tables and division facts, commutativity, measures conversions including time, area as well a way to find unit and non-unit fractions. The twilight will also give ideas for the teaching of geometry through art.

    We will also consider the events happening in the summer term that you could use as a starting point for maths such as sports day to revisit statistics and measure.

     

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course, you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Be able to plan term 6 to ensure that you secure core learning for all.
    • Have new ideas to use to engage pupils in core maths learning.
    • Have time to plug gaps in learning as well as challenging your more able.
    • Be able to make more cross curricular links to make maths more meaningful for your pupils.
