    Course overview

    Eligibility: This course is open to any Y5/6 and Y6 taechers in any junior, primary or special school.

    This hour online twilight will discuss the core learning that Y6 pupils need to have in order to be ready for the Y7 maths curriculum. It will support you with planning your term 6 maths ensuring that you plan for the gaps in learning as well as offering challenge for your more able and prepare them for Y7.

    The twilight starts by looking at investigations to secure place value and the four rules of calculation, both mental and written strategies, at the same time keeping a daily focus on basic arithmetic skills.

    Many pupils are leaving Y6 still not secure enough with fractions, decimals and % so we will discuss what is essential and look at resources to support this.

    To get ready for new learning in Y7 we will look at fun investigations with calculators and measures, look at how we can use art to secure translation and tessellation as well as using a compass for drawings spirals and arcs.

    The final part of the session will look at what events you can use to support the transition to Y7, such as money week, outdoor learning and links to school events such as summer fayres and sports days. 

     

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course, you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Be able to plan term 6 to ensure that you secure core learning for all and that pupils are ready for Y7
    • Have new ideas to use to engage pupils in core learning.
    • Have time to plug gaps in learning will also challenging your more able.
    • Be able to make more cross curricular links to make more meaningful for your pupils.
