    Course overview

    Eligibility: This course is open to all infant, junior and primary schools.

    This is a 45-minute online staff meeting.

    The staff meeting format is intended for all relevant staff at a school to attend as one.

    Visual Representation: It allows children to visualise the addition calculation as they tell the story, making it easier to understand the concept of adding more to a group of objects.

    Contextual Understanding: The structure provides a meaningful context for the addition calculation, helping children to see the calculation in a relatable way.

    Language Development: It encourages the use of language, as children articulate their thoughts and experiences, which is essential for their cognitive development.

    Problem-Solving Skills: The structure helps children develop problem-solving skills by asking questions and finding solutions to the story they are telling.

    A first, then and now approach to word problems exposes the structure and allows teachers to focus on the structure rather than the context of the problem.

    This staff meeting will allow you time to reflect on your current teaching of word problems, this approach can be used from EYFS to Y6 to support all learners with word problems.

     

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course, you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Have a clear understanding of the first, then and now approach to solving word problems
    • To have a clear understanding of the progression of first, then and now can be used from simple one step to multi step problems from EYFS to Y6
    • To use manipulatives and models and images as part of the first, then and now process
    • To have a good understanding of the importance of the language we use when solving word problems
    • To have time to ask questions and ask for advice

    The charge for this course or event is: £50 per school
