• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to all infant, junior and primary schools.

This is a 45-minute online staff meeting.

The staff meeting format is intended for all relevant staff at a school to attend as one.

To decide if this is for you reflect on the statements below:

    • Too many pupils rely on their fingers to solve simple calculations.
    • Too many of pupils are not secure with using known facts to help them solve more complex calculations.
    • Too many KS2 pupils overuse formal written methods when an efficient mental method would be more appropriate.
    • As a school we don’t focus enough on teaching mental strategies.

If any of the statements are true for your school then this is the staff meeting for you!

To have success in calculation, pupils need to be able to use their core number facts to help them solve more complex calculations and not just in isolation.  If pupils are not able to solve calculations efficiently, flexibly, and accurately means that children have less cognitive space and energy to think about problem-solving and may frequently lose track of their thinking.

This staff meeting will allow you time to reflect on your current teaching of mental calculation strategies, including the use of jottings and models and manipulatives to support. It will support you with a range of new ideas to try in classrooms to secure automaticity.
