• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to all infant, junior and primary schools. The staff meeting format is intended for all relevant teaching and support staff at a school to attend as one.

As this course is in a Staff Meeting format, only one booking is required for your school. Please ensure the booking is in the name of the person who you wish to receive all communication (eg head teacher, maths lead).

This 45-minute online staff meeting will support you as a school to review how you could be making more use of the bar model when teaching arithmetic to support pupils. We will look at the progression in the use of bar models from place value into arithmetic and how to model this so that pupils grow in confidence, including how to support pupils to draw the models themselves.

You may ask why use bar models for arithmetic - why not just jump straight into word problems? Here are just a few reasons why.

    • Bar models for arithmetic help develop number sense as they reveal the underlying structure of problems, helping students understand and manipulate unknown quantities.
    • Bar models will support pupils to make links between additive and multiplicative reasoning.
    • Bar models provide a consistent model that can be used for all four rules of calculation and then used to apply to other topics including fractions, money and time.
    • Bar models provide images to support more difficult aspects of arithmetic such as finding the difference, use of factor pairs for short division.

You may also want to book the bar models for teaching word problems staff meeting as a follow up.
