Eligibility: This course is open to Y3 and Y4 teachers from any junior or primary school

How confident are you in assessing writing throughout the year? With multiple assessment points built into the school calendar, teachers are expected to track attainment and progress – but this is no easy task. Judgements are often made against end-of-year statements, even though children haven’t yet completed the full programme of learning. Without official benchmarks or exemplars to show what mid-year attainment looks like, it’s difficult to judge writing with confidence and consistency.

This practical workshop supports teachers in Years 3 and 4 to build greater clarity around writing expectations and strengthen their assessment skills. Using a range of real pupils examples, participants will explore what age-related standards look like in practice, both within their year group and across the lower key stage 2 phase. Whether teachers come alone or in pairs, this is an opportunity to broaden points of reference and work with colleagues from different schools.

Teachers are encouraged to bring their preferred assessment framework (e.g the Integra Teacher Assessment Criteria). The session offers reflection, practical strategies, and time to work with colleagues beyond your own context, to encourage confident and informed judgements back at school.
