Eligibility: This course is open to Y6 teachers, writing leaders, English leaders and Senior Leaders form any infant, junior or primary school.
This half day course supports Year 6 teachers to understand and recognise writing that meets the GDS standard. We’ll explore how writers demonstrate effective choices and conscious control over language, structure, and tone, using nationally benchmarked examples to guide discussion.
We will unpick the relationship between reading and writing that underpins this standard and examine how proficient writers incorporate techniques absorbed from their appreciation of high-quality, authentic texts, to craft their own work. We’ll discuss how understanding this standard informs the teaching of writing and consider the impact of classroom practice on pupils’ outcomes.
There are no shortcuts to greater depth. Instead, this course highlights the importance of a holistic approach to the English curriculum and the significance of reading, in developing great writing.
As a result of this course, you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:
A deeper understanding of the Greater Depth Standard for writing at the end of Key Stage 2, including how to recognise writing that demonstrates conscious control of language, structure, and tone.
The role of reading in developing writing skills at the Greater Depth standard, with a focus on how students draw independently on what they have read as models for their own writing.
Effective classroom practices that support writing development over time.
