Eligibility: This course is open to any KS2 teachers, reading leaders and English Leaders from any junior or primary school.
As pupils progress through Key Stage 2, reading becomes an essential tool for thinking, learning, and communicating. But beyond statutory tests and curriculum content, how can we ensure that all children become fluent, thoughtful, and motivated readers?
This three-part course explores the wide potential of reading in KS2, from developing higher-level comprehension and fluency, to embedding reading meaningfully across the curriculum and nurturing reading for pleasure as part of classroom culture. Designed to support both classroom practice and reading leadership, each session combines to offer a research-informed perspective on what it means to teach reading across the key stage.
Session 1 – Exploring comprehension strategies, fiction and fluency to deepen understanding and engagement
Session 2 – Using reading across the curriculum to develop knowledge, vocabulary, and disciplinary thinking
Session 3 – Fostering reading for pleasure through pedagogy, identity, and a rich reading culture.
The course invites participants to reflect on their own curriculum and reading communities, engage with significant research, and develop clear, actionable strategies to support all readers. A fourth half-day is recommended for personal reflection, further reading and planning ideas into practice.
Delegates will:
Deepen their understanding of how reading develops in Key Stage 2 through engaging teaching for comprehension, fluency, and enjoyment.
Experience practical strategies for embedding reading across the curriculum and nurturing a strong culture of reading for pleasure
Explore high-quality texts - focused on developing confident, curious, and critical readers.
