Eligibility: This course is open to KS1 teachers, reading leaders and English leaders from any infant or primary school.
Reading is central to academic success, personal development, and future opportunity. Teaching reading (beyond phonics) is about helping children become curious, capable, and joyful readers for life.
This three-part course explores the wider significance of reading: how to invite children into the reading community, interact meaningfully with texts, and develop children’s intellect through thoughtful reading experiences. Together, these sessions build a deeper perspective on teaching reading - emphasising the power of reading to develop cognition, strengthen community and wellbeing, and spark genuine enjoyment.
Each session explores a different aspect of reading, combining research, classroom practice, and reflection.
Session 1 – Teaching comprehension through fiction, engaging readers, and developing fluency
Session 2 – Embedding reading across the curriculum, deepening understanding, and sustaining fluency
Session 3 – The role of reading for pleasure and ‘reader identity’ in developing thoughtful, critical readers.
As well as the face-to-face sessions, delegates are encouraged to allocate a fourth half-day for personal reflection, professional reading, and developing next steps back in school.
This course is ideal for teachers and reading leaders thinking beyond the mechanics of reading, and ready to explore its full potential in the curriculum.
Delegates will:
Deepen their understanding of how reading is developed in Key Stage 1, beyond decoding and phonics skills.
Experience practical strategies for embedding reading across the curriculum and nurturing a strong culture of reading for pleasure.
Explore high-quality texts - focused on developing confident, curious, and critical readers.
