• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to all headteachers and senior leaders in primary and secondary schools.

This two-hour online briefing is designed specifically for busy headteachers who want to feel confident and well-informed about the DfE’s Writing Framework (July 2025). The session will provide a clear overview of the key guidance, with particular attention to the section on leadership of English and writing, and what this means in practice for curriculum development and pedagogy.

Alongside expert input, there will be structured opportunities to collaborate in breakout rooms with colleagues from a range of school contexts. These discussions will enable participants to share reflections, raise questions, and explore the implications of the framework in a supportive, professional environment.

The session is carefully paced to ensure leaders leave not only briefed on the content, but also equipped to guide and support their English leaders with a context-conscious approach. By considering both the emphases and omissions within the framework, headteachers will reflect on possible consequences for their own schools and leave with greater clarity about next steps.

This briefing also supports secondary colleagues seeking to deepen their understanding of the progression in writing skills from primary into key stage 3.
