• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to Y5 teachers in any school junior or primary school

The mathematics curriculum in Y5 is significantly more demanding than in Y4, with some big jumps in learning, particularly when it comes to calculation and fractions, decimals and percentages.  In arithmetic, often pupils will choose a written method when a mental one would be more efficient, and make simple mistakes.

These two half day, online sessions will look at how to support all your learners in Y5 to be fully secure with mental and written calculation methods, fractions, decimals and percentages as well as topics such as time, geometry and conversion of measures.

Session 1:  securing times tables and division facts, teaching long division and long multiplication, mental calculation strategies, fractions and decimals within place value

Session 2:  fractions, decimals and percentages within calculation, retention of geometry, teaching of time and conversion of measures, solving word problems
