Eligibility: This course is open to South Gloucestershire Council managers.
This practical course will help managers build confidence in managing people in line with the council's Managing Employee Performance (MEP) procedure and PDPR standards. It focuses on proactive management approaches that help prevent issues from escalating to formal procedures, including effective supervision, regular feedback, meaningful PDPRs and early informal intervention.
Performance conversations can be one of the most challenging aspects of management. This course provides the opportunity to develop practical skills, consider effective approaches and understand how performance management fits with the council's line manager expectations. Participants will explore how to agree clear objectives, hold productive one-to-one, supervision and PDPR conversations, use coaching and strengths-based questioning techniques, and take appropriate informal action to address concerns promptly and fairly.
The course also covers managers' responsibilities for planning and completing PDPRs, reviewing progress against agreed actions, recognising when additional support may be needed, and understanding when to involve HR Casework & Change or move to formal processes. By the end of the course, managers will be better equipped to manage performance consistently, confidently and in line with council policy.
