    Course overview

    Eligibility: This course is open to Early Years Settings, Childminders , Reception and Nursery Class Teachers in South Gloucestershire only

    This one hour webinar draws on current guidance, research, and reflective early years practice to explore how hidden biases can influence everyday practice within early years environments. Rooted in reflective and strengths-based practice, the session encourages practitioners to consider how unconscious assumptions, experiences, values, and social messages can shape interactions, expectations, decision-making, and relationships with children, families, and colleagues.

    Participants are encouraged to reflect on how bias can appear in subtle and often unintended ways within daily practice, including perceptions of behaviour, communication, family engagement, safeguarding, inclusion, and opportunities provided to children. The webinar creates space to think about how increased self-awareness and reflection can support more equitable, respectful, and inclusive approaches across early years provision.

    With no expectation to interact, the session offers a relaxed and reflective space to listen and explore ideas individually or as part of a team. Through practical examples, reflective prompts, and opportunities for self-reflection, practitioners are supported to consider how inclusive practice begins with ongoing curiosity, reflection, and openness to learning.

    A reflective follow-up task will be provided after the session to support ongoing learning, discussion, and application within everyday practice.

    While each webinar can be attended individually, practitioners are encouraged to attend all three sessions within the EDI Bitesize series.

     

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Develop an understanding of hidden and unconscious bias within early years practice.
    • Reflect on how assumptions and experiences can influence interactions, expectations, and decision-making.
    • Explore how bias may impact children, families, colleagues, and relationships within early years environments.
    • Consider the importance of reflective practice in developing more equitable and inclusive approaches.
    • Identify practical ways to increase self-awareness and support respectful, inclusive practice within everyday provision.

    There is a charge of £0 per delegate for this course. Free for South Gloucestershire delegates only.
