• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to any apprentice working in an Early Years setting in South Gloucestershire only.

This programme is delivered over four fun, interactive two‑hour sessions, designed to support Early Years apprentices to build confidence, knowledge, and practical skills in key areas of child development. The sessions provide a relaxed and supportive space to learn together, share experiences, and reflect on everyday practice, with activities and ideas that can be applied immediately in the setting.

    Session 1: Importance of Play
This session explores why play is central to children’s learning and development. Apprentices will learn about the Characteristics of Effective Learning and how play supports healthy brain development, curiosity, problem‑solving, and lifelong learning.

Session 2: Introduction to Communication and Language
Apprentices will explore how communication and language develop through positive, meaningful interactions. The session highlights inclusive approaches that support all children to build confidence, listening skills, and expressive language.

Session 3: Introduction to Physical Development
This practical session focuses on gross and fine motor development, offering hands‑on ideas to support coordination, strength, and independence through active play.

Session 4: Introduction to Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
This session introduces attachment, the role of the key person, and strategies to support self‑regulation and emotional literacy.

Each session is practical, engaging, and packed with ideas to try straight back in the setting.

Apprentices will need to attend all sessions
