• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to practitioners in South Gloucestershire Early Years settings and reception classes.

This practical, evidence-based programme is designed to support practitioners working with autistic children and children with social communication differences. Based on the Hanen approach, the course focuses on understanding how children communicate, interact and learn, and provides strategies to help develop meaningful communication, social interaction and engagement.

Participants learn how to identify a child’s stage of communication, follow the child’s lead, create opportunities for interaction, and use everyday routines and play as learning opportunities. The course also explores ways to support joint attention, turn-taking, understanding and expressive communication.

Through discussion, reflection and practical examples, practitioners develop confidence in adapting their communication style and environment to better meet individual children's needs. The training promotes partnership working with families and encourages consistent approaches across settings and home.
