• Course overview

    Eligibility: This course is open to Early Years practitioners working with children aged 2-5, we will prioritise South Gloucestershire settings and childminders.

    This 4 session course supports early years practitioners in becoming Language Champions. In South Gloucestershire, over 60% of early years settings have a named Language Champion, and this programme continues to grow a supportive network. 

    Session 1: Communication Rich for All

    This session deepens your understanding of speech, language and communication development, exploring the vital role of the adult and the impact of high‑quality interactions, communication‑rich environments, and effective communication and language curriculum development.

    Session 2: Supporting Neurodivergent Learners in Communication and Language 

    This session explores the diverse ways children communicate and how language development may differ for neurodivergent learners, sharing practical strategies and a range of communication tools to support inclusive practice.

    Session 3: Supporting Dual Language Learners

    This session enhances your understanding of dual language development and provides practical strategies to support children and families learning English as an additional language.

    Session 4: The Magic of Story Telling

    This interactive session will ignite your creativity, offering practical ideas for storytelling and story making within your setting, and inspiring children to become confident, imaginative storytellers.

    Attending this course also opens up ongoing professional development opportunities through our Language Champion Network, supporting continued learning, collaboration and shared best practice.

     

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Develop a strong understanding of speech, language and communication development, including the role of the adult, high‑quality interactions, and communication‑rich environments.
    • Build confidence in designing and delivering an inclusive communication and language curriculum that supports all children.
    • Recognise and respond to the diverse communication styles of neurodivergent learners using practical strategies, including intensive interaction approaches and communication tools.
    • Enhance practice in supporting dual language learners and their families, with effective strategies for children learning English as an additional language.
    • Use storytelling and story making creatively to promote children’s imagination, language development, and confidence as communicators, while engaging with ongoing professional learning through the Language Champion Network

     

    Charges

    There is a charge of £0 per delegate for this course for South Gloucestershire settings and childminders. For all others the charge is £120.

    If this course has a cost for your setting and a booking is made before 1st September 2026, we will contact you in early September to request payment.  From 1st September 2026 you will be asked to pay via GovPay upon sign up, using a credit or debit card.
