• Course overview

    Eligibility: This course is open to all Early Years practitioners South Gloucestershire. 

    The course will focus on identifying potential barriers to typical development and provide practical strategies to support children in overcoming these challenges. Emphasis will be placed on the motor and sensory skills necessary for completing self-care tasks required for school-aged children, including dressing, grooming, toileting, and eating and drinking.   

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course you will have the knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Understanding of key self-care skills for a successful transition to Reception year. 
    • Identifying fine and gross motor skills needed for dressing, grooming, toileting, and eating and drinking.
    • Recognise sensory processing skills that may influence children's independence in daily routines.
    • Detecting early signs of motor, sensory or developmental barriers that may impact self-care skills acquisition. 
    • Break down self-care routines into structured, developmentally appropriate steps.
    • Implement practical, play-based strategies and activities to strengthen underlying motor and sensory skills. 
    • Scaffold learning appropriately to promote gradual independence while supporting children's confidence and self-esteem.
    • Work collaboratively with parents and carers to ensure continuity of support between home and early years setting.
    • Reflect on and adapt practice to create an environment that promotes school readiness and independence.

    There is no charge for this course for South Gloucestershire delegates.
