    Eligibility: This course is open to South Gloucestershire Early Years Settings, Childminders , Reception and Nursery Class Teachers in South Gloucestershire.

    Sessions include discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work. 

    Participants will learn signs and symbols for stages 1 and 2 of the Core Vocabulary and some additional vocabulary. 

    The aim is to equip learners with a broad base of vocabulary and understanding for general communication support.  

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Signs and symbols from stage 1 & 2 of the Core Vocabulary teaching around 125 signs and symbols 
    • Introduction to Makaton principles, its development, and its use in different settings
    • Relationship to sign languages and AAC systems 
    • Being able to communicate is one of the most important skills we need in life 
    • Makaton is a unique communication programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate 
    • Communication is a human right and Makaton is a tool that can support inclusive practice.

    Charges

    There is a charge of £80 per delegate for this course. 

    When you sign up for this course, for the time being, payment of course fees will be made in the usual way, through the South Gloucestershire Council Website. Go to www.SouthGlos.gov.uk and click on Pay, then Pay Online. Scroll down to Other Payments. You will then see an option to chose Early Years Training. Select your course from the drop down list and follow the instructions to make payment. If payment has not been made 14 days prior to the start date you place will be cancelled.
