• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to teaching assistants, higher level teaching assistants, SENCos and teachers from any infant, junior, primary and secondary school in South Gloucestershire and close surrounding areas.

The ELSA project consists of six training days and four additional follow on supervision sessions and aims to help schools to build the capacity to meet the needs of a wide range of emotionally vulnerable pupils. When children have emotional, social or psychological difficulties, their capacity to learn is affected and there is a knock-on effect on the learning of other pupils. The ELSA project was developed to provide an additional level of attention, care and intervention that will enable children to feel better about themselves and their time at school. Full course information can be found in the flyer viewable form the Pre-coursework and Course Documents folder below, this includes:

    • What does an ELSA do?
    • How will an ELSA benefit your school?
    • Who can train as an ELSA
    • What qualities does an ELSA need?
    • What does the training involve?
    • What is the school commitment?

Please note that your Line Manager will be asked to attend a meeting on 21st January 2026 from 4 to 5 pm, to outline the support required for your schools' ELSA.  Please provide their name and email address in the 'Delegate training and dietary requirements' section as you make your booking.
