• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to teaching assistants, higher level teaching assistants, SENCos and teachers from infant, junior, primary or secondary schools in South Gloucestershire, and close surrounding areas.

The Mediated Learning Support Assistant (MeLSA) course is designed by educational psychologists to help schools support skilled, independent learning. It trains individuals (MeLSAs) who work directly with children and young people, using an accessible, interactive, and evidence-based approach. MeLSAs learn the psychology behind mediating learning and how to apply it effectively.

Training includes 6 full days plus 4 supervised practice sessions over a year, leading to certification. Line managers must attend a 1-hour MS Teams session on Wednesday 24 March 2026, 2-3 pm – please provide their name and email address when booking. The course costs £750 per delegate and includes workbooks, handouts/resources, and basic refreshments (please bring your own lunch).

To maintain the MeLSA title, certified MeLSAs must attend termly supervision (2–3 hours), costing £264 per year. This ensures ethical and professional standards are upheld.

The course is open to support staff (TAs, LSAs), teachers, SENCos, and others identified as suitable (see job description/person specification in the course documents folder below). Full course information is available in the flyer.
