Mediated Learning Support Assistant/Approach (MeLSA) course is a training and supervision programme designed by educational psychologists to build the capacity of schools to support skilled and independent learning.
MeLSA provides training to individuals (called MeLSAs) that work directly with children and young people. This accessible, interactive, and evidence-based training ensures that MeLSAs understand the psychology of mediating learning and gain the skills to assist a child or young person to become a more skilled and independent learner.
MeLSAs are supported to apply the training in their own educational settings through ongoing supervision from educational psychologists.
Trainee MeLSAs attend 6 full training days and subsequently carry out supervised practice over the course of the year leading to MeLSA certification. It is also a pre-requisite that MeLSA line managers attend a 1 hour MS Teams session.
The cost for this course is £750 per delegate, which includes six full days training, four subsequent supervision sessions, workbooks to accompany each session as well as relevant handouts/resources plus basic refreshments (please bring own lunch).
Please be aware that once MeLSA certification is gained, MeLSAs need to commit to ongoing supervision sessions in order to maintain the use of the MeLSA title and to support their role in school. This is to ensure that MeLSAs are given the necessary professional and ethical support to carry out their work to an appropriate standard. Supervision is carried out for 2-3 hours, once a term. There are therefore ongoing supervision costs (currently £264 per year) in subsequent years following the initial training in order to maintain MeLSA accreditation.
This course is for support staff (TAs, LSAs) as well as teachers, SENCos or other teaching staff, who have been identified for suitability according to the criteria on the attached job description and person specification (viewable in the pre-coursework and course documents folder below).
A Flyer with full information is also available to view below.
