• Course overview

Eligibility: South Gloucestershire Council staff and partner agency practitioners working with children and families.

Strong family and community networks play a crucial role in children's safety, wellbeing, identity and sense of belonging. We Do: Finding Family Networks brings together learning from relational practice, Family Finding, systemic practice and Signs of Safety approaches to help practitioners identify and strengthen supportive networks around children and families.

Participants will explore why connectedness matters, how relationships influence outcomes for children, and the role practitioners play in helping families recognise and build upon existing strengths and support systems. Using a systemic lens, practitioners will consider how family relationships, experiences and wider networks influence individual family members and shape children's lives. The course introduces practical tools and techniques to uncover family, friendship and community connections, including genograms, ecomaps, circles of safety and support, and network mapping approaches.

The session also considers barriers to network involvement, the impact of family experiences and relationships, and how practitioners can engage families in meaningful conversations about support. By the end of the course, participants will be better equipped to help children and families develop sustainable networks that enhance safety, wellbeing, belonging and long-term resilience. .
