• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to South Gloucestershire reception class teachers.

This 2-hour, face to face session, aimed at Reception class teachers, focuses on developing an effective understanding of formative assessment in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Participants will explore how to identify children’s starting points through a combination of baseline assessment approaches and skilled practitioner observation. The session highlights the importance of recognising each child’s unique strengths, experiences and developmental stage on entry to reception.

Teachers will consider how to use this rich assessment information to inform responsive planning that supports children’s progress across all areas of learning. There will be opportunities to reflect on how ongoing assessment can be embedded within everyday practice, ensuring it remains purposeful, manageable and aligned with high-quality teaching.

By the end of the session, participants will have increased confidence in using formative assessment to shape provision, adapt teaching, and create meaningful learning experiences that enable all children to thrive from their starting points.

Please note that two identical sessions are available, but delegates only need to attend one.
