Eligibility: This course is open to all workers in Children’s Services
This training equips Families First Partnership practitioners with the knowledge and skills to support young people and families affected by drug and alcohol use. It focuses on building confidence in providing accurate information, offering practical harm reduction advice, and recognising when specialist intervention is needed. Through teaching, discussion and practical exercises, participants learn to use screening tools effectively, identify escalating risks and navigate local referral pathways.
A key element of the training is strengthening practitioners’ ability to hold safe, meaningful and trauma‑informed conversations. Emphasis is placed on using sensitive, non‑judgemental language to ensure support is delivered in a compassionate and empowering way. While the primary focus is on young people’s substance use, the course also explores parental use and its impact on children’s wellbeing and family dynamics.
By the end of the training, practitioners will be able to assess need, provide appropriate guidance and confidently take next steps to secure further support, ensuring timely and consistent help for families.
