• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to OTs and OTAs in locality teams in ASC.

This two-day, face-to-face course is open to Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants working within Adult Social Care locality teams. It is specifically designed for practitioners involved in assessing for Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs) and home adaptations. Delivered by Foundations, the national body for DFGs and Home Improvement Agencies, the course provides a comprehensive and practical grounding in the legal, professional and clinical aspects of adaptation assessment. Participants will develop the skills required to complete robust, defensible adaptation assessments. The programme builds participants’ confidence in applying the legislative framework that underpins home adaptations, including the Care Act 2014, DFG legislation, Building Regulations, BS 8300 and CDM Regulations. Key areas of focus include applying the ‘necessary and appropriate’ test, managing complexity in challenging cases, balancing cost, feasibility and risk, and clearly justifying recommendations through sound clinical reasoning. The course combines engaging, interactive teaching with real-life anonymised case studies and small group problem-solving. Practical learning includes developing skills in reading and interpreting architects’ plans, assessing design proposals against access standards, and working effectively with specifications to support high-quality, person-centred adaptation outcomes.
