    Eligibility: This course is open to anyone in education, health, or social care.

    This session is suitable for practitioners who need to develop some foundational knowledge and understanding of the Act prior to and in preparation for participating in the more in-depth 1-day MCA In Practice training. It is also relevant for staff who may not be required to undertake mental capacity assessments but who need to understand how the MCA shapes our engagement with young people, adults and carers.

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course, you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • State the principles of the Mental Capacity Act.
    • Describe the role and function of the code of practice to the Mental Capacity Act.
    • State what is meant by ‘capacity’.
    • Identify when and by whom assessments of capacity are undertaken.
    • State ways to maximise people’s capacity to make decisions or to participate in decision making.
    • Describe how people can and should be supported to make their own decisions.
    • State what needs to be considered in relation to capacity and ‘unwise’ decisions (principle 3)
    • Identify the process for establishing best interests.
