• Course overview

Eligibility: This course is open to everyone working in social care.

This three-day workshop offers a practice-focused introduction to key systemic practice ideas, skills, and techniques that can be applied in everyday work with children, young people, and families. Each day blends accessible systemic theory with practical examples. Participants will have the opportunity to meet colleagues from across the service, share experiences, learn together, and experiment with new ways of thinking and working.

    Course structure:

    • Day 1 – What goes on in families?
    • Day 2 – How we work with families.
    • Day 3 – Working with risks and networks.

    Who should attend:

This course is open to all staff who work with, or supervise those working with, children, young people, or families. No prior knowledge of systemic theory is required—whether you're new to these ideas or looking to refresh and deepen your understanding, you are very welcome.

    Additional information:

This course complements the STAR programme and is a core element of our practice model.

    Learning outcomes

As a result of this course, you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Understand the basic theoretical foundations of systemic practice (circular causality/patterns of interaction)
    • Consider family dynamics, including beliefs and ‘scripts’ and social GRACES to think differently about what might be going on in families
    • Introducing hypothesising to consider why unhelpful patterns of behaviour may be repeating
    • How to apply systemic interventions, through questioning (interventive interviewing) and solution focussed practice and how this links with Signs of Safety.
    • Consider and refine how we develop relational practice, and how genograms can be used as a tool to understand and identify narratives within family systems.
    • To introduce the idea of safe uncertainty, and how we work with colleagues from other agencies to manage disagreements and work with differing power dynamics.
    • To conduct an appreciative enquiry into how systemic ideas could influence and enhance practice across the service
