    Eligibility: This course is open to South Gloucestershire Council managers only.

    We are pleased to offer a comprehensive course designed to equip managers with the essential skills needed to recruit and retain staff effectively. Effective recruitment is vital for building a strong, capable team that drives the success of South Gloucestershire Council. Even if you have prior recruitment experience in other organisations, attending this course is crucial to learning best practices specific to our council. All hiring managers are expected to participate.

    Course objectives:

    • Familiarise participants with the council’s recruitment guide.
    • Explore essential and additional criteria for various posts.
    • Discuss options for advert content and placement.
    • Identify appropriate assessment tools to complement interviews.
    • Gain insights into preparing for interviews, making fair and unbiased recruitment decisions, and providing constructive feedback.
    • Learn the steps to effectively induct new starters and guide them through the probation period.

    This practical, interactive course includes a range of activities, discussions, and reflection exercises to ensure a thorough understanding of the recruitment process.     Learning outcomes

    This course will enable you to:

    • Understand your role as a manager in the recruitment and induction process within South Gloucestershire Council and key policies.
    • Set criteria for the role that you can assess against using selection (assessment and interview) processes.
    • Write appropriate interview questions in line with organisational values.
    • Fairly assess and evaluate an applicant’s performance at interview and identify the impact of bias.
    • Provide constructive feedback to an unsuccessful candidate following interview.
    • Understand the post-interview stages of job offer and selection procedures necessary.
    • Understand steps necessary to onboard and induct a new member of staff.
