    Eligibility: This course is open to all social care professionals.

    This comprehensive one-day programme is designed for council employees and staff from all statutory, voluntary, and independent sector organisations who work with people with epilepsy. The course combines interactive discussions, demonstrations, practical equipment use, and group work to provide a thorough understanding of epilepsy care.

    Staff who are not required to administer rescue treatment for Status Epilepticus need only attend the morning session. This session focuses on increasing awareness of the causes and types of epilepsy, presented in a person-centred and safe manner. The afternoon session focuses on the specifics of Status Epilepticus, highlighting the critical importance of emergency treatment. It will cover the significance of adhering to an individual's care plan for rescue treatment and include a demonstration of how to administer Rectal Diazepam and Midazolam.

    By the end of this programme, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to support individuals with epilepsy effectively, ensuring their safety and wellbeing.

    Learning outcomes

    By completing this course, you will:

    • Gain an awareness of causes and types of epilepsy.
    • Understand how to support someone with epilepsy in a safe and person-centred manner.
    • Recognise seizure triggers.
    • Identify seizure symptoms and provide appropriate first aid.
    • Understand the importance of and demonstrate the administration of Buccal Midazolam and Rectal Diazepam.
    • Recognise the importance of an individual's epilepsy protocol.
