• Course overview



    Eligibility: This course is open to everyone.

    This one-day course covers essential topics such as infection control and hand hygiene, compression stockings, pressure area care, continence, catheter and stoma care, diabetes awareness, and physiological measurements. It is designed for adult social care staff in South Gloucestershire, as well as those working in domiciliary, residential, and day care services, including staff from statutory, independent, voluntary, and private sector agencies.

    The course features trainer presentations, discussions, and a short multiple-choice assessment at the end of the day to ensure participants have retained the information. All relevant handouts and course materials will be provided by the facilitator, Alfred Puerta Casadevall, and the Clinical Skills Team from North Bristol Trust. The learning outcomes offer a comprehensive overview of the course content.

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course, you will have knowledge of:

    • Basic principles of infection, chain of infection, donning and doffing of PPE, hand washing technique and Light Box exercise, risks of not washing hands after glove use
    • The background of compression stockings, how to safely apply them, care for them, and assess for pressure damage.
    • Theory regarding pressure ulcers, pressure areas, repositioning, and the use of pressure ulcer risk assessment tools.
    • The theory behind incontinence, and learn how to assess and report.
    • Basic knowledge of the physiology of urethral and suprapubic catheters, learn how to manage and care of patients with a catheter, including reporting issues.
    • The different types of stomas and their care, how to identify and report any issues, and how to change a stoma bag.
    • Theory behind diabetes, including potential complications. Learn how to perform a capillary blood glucose test, understand the results, manage complications and care for diabetes in end of life.
    • How to assess a deteriorating service user, understand the theory behind physiological measurements and how to perform blood pressure monitoring temperature monitoring, pulse oximetry monitoring.

    Charges

    The charge for the course is £115.00, however you may be entitled to a reduced rate, or fully funded place depending on what organisation you work for.
