    Eligibility: This course is open to social workers on the ASYE programme only.

    This course covers drugs and drug use. We look at the impact from drugs on society and the impact on physical and mental health. The course explores why young people choose to use drugs and what may lead to them trying substances. Drug laws and penalties are covered in the course, and we look in detail at common drugs and other substances that may not be as popular but still valid. The course covers trauma and drug use and the impact on families and young people. The course looks at the effect of each drug and the risks from them also covering exploitation and the journey of drugs in society. New and emerging drugs and trends, common drug names and language used by young people. The course will also cover tobacco, vaping and alcohol and the use of resources and activities will be shared with the group.

    As a result of this course, you will have an understanding of:

    • YPDAS referral process
    • Exploitation and drugs (journey of drugs, impact on young person, what to look for)
    • Drug use and trauma (link between drugs and trauma)
    • Exploring new drugs and trends (emerging trends)
    • Drugs and harm reduction (what is safe advice)
    • Drugs and withdrawals (what to expect, services, duration of withdrawals)
    • Drug delivery and technology (how young people get their drugs)
    • Legalisation of drugs (debate)
    • Gangs and drugs
