    Eligibility: This course is open to foster carers

    Creating safe, stable environments is essential for looked-after young people to thrive. However, outcomes for those of African heritage remain disproportionately negative. This course is designed to support foster carers in understanding the oppressive influences that may affect African heritage young people and shape their experiences in care. Through exploring key terminologies and concepts, carers will gain insight into the systemic and societal factors contributing to these disparities. The course introduces anti-oppressive practice and encourages reflection on individual thinking, offering a safe and respectful space for open discussion and shared learning. By deepening awareness and promoting inclusive care approaches, the course aims to empower carers to better support African heritage young people in achieving positive outcomes.

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course, you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Understanding the context that have led to disproportionate outcomes for African heritage young people.
    • Understand the stages of how racial positioning is formulated and how this can be used reflectively to work toward better relationships with African heritage young people.
    • Improve understanding of what are anti-oppressive ways of being and doing are.
    • Building carer’ confidence and capacity to support African heritage young people.
