    Eligibility: This course is open to foster carers.

    This course provides a comprehensive understanding of domestic abuse, including its various forms such as coercive control. Participants will explore the prevalence and context of domestic abuse, with a particular focus on its impact on young people. The course will help identify indicators of controlling behaviour and describe the short- and long-term effects on children who experience domestic abuse. Additionally, the course will cover potential trauma triggers for children who have lived through such experiences and offer trauma-informed, practical strategies to support their recovery. Finally, participants will learn about additional resources and support available for foster carers and children affected by domestic abuse. This course aims to equip individuals with the knowledge and tools to effectively support and protect vulnerable children.

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course, you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Explain what domestic abuse is and the range of ways it is perpetrated, including coercive control.
    • Describe the prevalence and context of domestic abuse, particularly relating to young people.
    • Identify indicators of controlling behaviour.
    • Describe the short- and longer-term impact on children of living with domestic abuse.
    • Identify what may re-trigger trauma for children who have lived with domestic abuse.
    • Explore trauma informed, practical strategies to support children to recover from the trauma of living with domestic abuse.
    • Identify additional sources of advice and support for foster carers and children in relation to domestic abuse.
