    Eligibility: This course is open to everyone.

    This interactive session is designed to deepen your understanding of self-harm, exploring what it is, why individuals may engage in self-harming behaviours, and the signs and indicators to look out for. The course aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to effectively support someone who is self-harming, focusing on best practice responses.

    Throughout the session, you will learn about the underlying reasons behind self-harm, how to identify and interpret the signs, and the most effective ways to offer support. The key objectives are to build your confidence, reduce stigma, and improve the overall response to individuals who self-harm.

    To ensure active participation and engagement, the trainer requests that all attendees have their cameras on during the session. This will help create a more interactive and supportive learning environment.

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course, you will have knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    • Definitions and statistics related to self-harm.
    • The triggers that can lead to self-harming behaviours.
    • Similarities and differences between self-harm and suicide, and learn how to appropriately ask about suicide.
    • The various functions and purposes self-harm may serve for individuals.
    • Signs and indicators of self-harming behaviours.
    • Barriers to accessing support from the client's perspective.
    • Harm minimisation techniques and alternatives to self-harm.
    • Strategies for broaching the topic of suspected self-harm.
    • Sensitive and appropriate language when discussing self-harm.
    • Best practice responses to support individuals who self-harm.
