    Eligibility: This course is open to front-line care staff.

    This course provides a thorough introduction to the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) for front-line care staff. You will explore practical examples of applying MCA principles in daily work that align with our core values. The course covers essential legal knowledge to determine when the MCA is applicable and outlines your responsibilities for seeking advice and support to take formal steps when necessary. Through interactive sessions and real-world scenarios, you will gain the skills and confidence to apply MCA principles effectively and ethically.

    Attend this course to enhance your understanding and application of the MCA to make sure you are well-prepared to support the rights and dignity of those you care for.

    Learning outcomes

    As a result of this course, you will be able to:

    • Outline and apply the five principles of the MCA in your engagement with adults.
    • Describe how the Act upholds our right to make our own decisions and provides a legal framework for others to make decisions on our behalf.
    • Understand how the MCA connects to our rights to liberty and respect for private and family life as outlined in the Human Rights Act 1998.
    • Identify the range of decisions covered by the Act, including personal life, health and social care, and deprivation of liberty.
    • Provide examples of when to question a person’s mental capacity to make a specific decision and outline the necessary actions for you or others.
    • Recognise how to support individuals to make decisions in their daily lives and understand the process for making best interests decisions when necessary.

    The charge for this course or event is: £57.00

    However, if your organisation contributes to the safeguarding board, or you are South Gloucestershire Council social care staff you will be entitled to a fully funded place. Fully funded places may be subject to a non-attendance or late cancellation fee.
